Ferragosto is a precious day in Italy. For the religious, it’s a day that commemorates the Virgin Mary’s assumption. For everyone else, it’s a holiday that coincides with the peak of summer. Reasons abound for August 15 to also mark one of the biggest beach parties in Italy, held at Papeete Beach in Milano Marittima.
Though I have yet to time my travel for this special holiday, this year I got a taste of what I’ve been missing. Papeete Beach is probably the hottest bagno in the city, with fans sporting its bright orange logo on swimsuits and t-shirts. Every Saturday and Sunday, from Easter to summer’s end, they have happy hour with a DJ until 8pm. I went for part 1 of a friend’s birthday bash.
The picture above was taken from our table set behind the DJ. On the other side, toward the sea, are lounge chairs and masses of people dancing in bikinis, swim shorts, and… speedos (I still can’t believe how many men I saw wearing these).
Part 2 of the birthday bash took place at Villa Papeete, to be shared in the following post.
