El Ateneo: Theatre-turned-bookstore

El Ateneo bookstore

A 1900's theatre converted into a 21st century bookstore.

What once was Teatro Gran Splendid, a 1900’s theatre, is now El Ateneo, a 21st century bookstore. It’s also one of my three go-to places for reading.

Walking down Avenida Santa Fe, you would think this is just another ordinary store. But take a few steps inside, and you will be pleasantly surprised by its grandeur. There are three floors of books above ground and a tiny nook below for the children’s section.

My favorite part is the back of the store, which used to be the theatre’s stage. Now, it is a cafe with tables to dine and comfy sofas to read.
